 Poor sound quality/bad design June 9, 2008

I bought these as a replacement my iPhone headphones. While they are inexpensive, I would not recommend them:
*Odd design recommends hanging them in a loop around your neck, which is just inconvenient. If you don't do this, the mic will be in the wrong place. The cord is so long that it gets tangled very easily.
*The fabric coating the cords creates a loud sound in the earpieces when it just brushes against your shirt. This gets annoying very quickly.
*While the low end sound is decent, there's a real lack of clarity on the high end. I'm by no means an audiophile, but the sounds quality is much worse than standard iPod headphones.
Overall, very poorly designed.

I used this product for about a month, and then somewhere between Beijing and Hyderabad the left earpiece died.
One Last Chance June 2, 2008
I've just ordered my fourth pair of Rivet iPhone compatible earbuds since the iPhone first went on sale. No, these were not for gifts. They were all for me. The plug connection just keeps on breaking.
Why, you might ask, would I keep on buying what seems to be an inferior product? It's simple. When they work they're just what I need. I listen mostly to podcasts and audiobooks. For these files they work just fine. I have been a musician for most of my 67 year life. My ears are still pretty reliable for a guy my age. I have some very expensive earbuds for listening to music, but for just being around the house or walking, and jogging these Rivets are perfect. They don't tangle easily, and when I bend over, they don't catch on cabinet pulls and yank a bud from my ears.
One of my ears seems to be slightly smaller than the other. The different sizes of buds solve that problem. They don't isolate the sound as much as some, but they are good enough. They don't have the most realistic sound, but at this price I wouldn't expect that. The unique design that loops around your neck is brilliant. So, I'll give them one last chance.
While on there site (http://www.rivetnow.com/home/file/product/iproduct_id/109/iPhone_Headset.html) Rivet doesn't say the plug is a different design, the picture, however, shows a plug that seems to be different than the ones I have purchased thus far. I would hope that Amazon would be selling the latest design.
This time, however, since the others have all broken at the plug end, I'll figure out a way to reenforce them at that point. Hopefully that will do the trick. If the plug that comes with my new set, seems in fact to be better, I will joyfully update my review to reflect this.
 finally - a compatible headset May 26, 2008
I like the toggle switch better than Apple's given that you can more accurately perceive the depression of the switch - lanyard design is great and keeps earpieces from getting pulled out of my ear - inserts are comfortable and block external noise very well (almost too well - I wear only one earpiece while multitasking) - the wires feel like a nylon string rather than a plastic coated wire.

There aren't a whole lot of options for in-ear headphones with an accessible button out if you own an iPhone. Given the alternatives you really do get a lot of bang for your buck with these headphones. The sound quality is decent and the earbuds stay firmly in place, as opposed to the default ones which come with your iPhone.
That said, I've just gone through my second pair. Each time I have had physical damage occur at the plug. The first time I removed the headphones while gripping the rubber casing around the plug, when I looked down I noticed that the plug remained solidly in the ipod and a frayed wire remained in my hand. The second time around the wire appears to have snapped inside the lanyard and I can no longer hear out of the left earbud.
All in all, not horrible given how inexpensive they are (which is why I opted to give it two stars rather than one), but the manufacturing quality leaves quite a bit to be desired.
