These Are A Better Value Than The ER-4Ps October 27, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought these and the ER6i set at the same time. Compared to the ER6i, the ER-4P does have somewhat better response at the low frequencies. However for overall sonic reproduction, my Bose Tri-Ports and Bose QuietComfort 3 headphones far outperform either of the Etymotics.
Here's my take on sound isolation/cancelling. My Bose QuietComfort 3 headphones do great on low frequency sounds (as they are designed to do). However, both of the Etymotic earphones do a much better job in the office environment. (The QuietComfort 3s do nothing to block or cancel office noise--you can only drown it out.) The good seal on the Etymotic earphones blocks sound from the computer fan whine and office conversations (co-worker whine)--even with my iPod set at its lowest volume. The Etymotics are the only earphones or headphones that I listen to with the volume set at minimum.
For my money though (hoping to help someone out here), I would purchase the Etymotic ER6i for decent sound and excellent high-frequency noise blocking. i.e. The extra money spent on the ER-4P bought me little value. However, don't expect either of the Etymotics to block low frequency sound, such as airliner rumble, or to provide superb music reproduction.
Happy Tunes!
Noise Blocking Advantage October 21, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
In addition to delivering audio superior to my earbuds, these are better than standard ear protection for yard work.
Perfect October 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found this product perfect. I use them for a long daily commute on a motorcycle. I was skeptical of the claimed Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) but they seal out noise as well as foam earplugs! The sound reproductions is fine to my ears. They aren't cheap, but seem likely to last a long time. I love them and will replace quickly if they ever need it.
Disappointment... October 7, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm not sure what everyone's talking about with these. I bought them based on reviews, and the sound is really disappointing. Could it be I'm doing something wrong? Is there some button or switch I need to flip on these things? Cause the sound is terrible. No bass whatsoever, no matter what the EQ setting on my iPod.
And noise isolating? Again, I don't get it. I thought my ear canals were pretty mainstream up til now, but maybe I have fine grooves which let in ambient sound. I'm going to return them and buy something cheaper and better.
Etymotic Research ER6i tested.... October 6, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I purchased the ER 6i's to wear on a recent motorcycle trip and on short Saturday morning rides. I'm aware of the damage extended exposure to the decibel levels experienced while riding that can occur and want to avoid it with full plugs rather than ear buds. These plugs, while effective at diminishing ambient noise to a safe level, give only a partial spectrum of frequencies found in music. That which is missing, is the bass. Many tunes with bass solos, seem absolutely quiet during the solos. it's like it isn't on the track. Listening to these plugs while on an airline flight is adequate. Therefore, high ambient noise levels experienced while motorcycling (and probably other noisy activities) seem to over tax the ER's ability to reveal a full musical spectrum.
