Poor fix for a big problem. August 31, 2010 Ben Abney I got this free from Apple as a "fix" for the reception problems with my iPhone 4.
First, about reception. The iPhone 4 reception is much poorer than my old iPhone 3g, and my wife's iPhone 3gs, no matter how it is held. This is in side by side comparisons, including at our home where calls can be easily made on the other 2 when the 4 shows no signal! Not a "software" problem with the signal bar display at all, but a hardware problem. This includes laying the iPhone 4 flat on the table, at least 3 feet away from any human. I'm probably going to take the refund when it is offered.
The bumper. Nice looking part. The problem is that it won't work with my waterproof case for the boat, my older charger that I leave in the garage that came with the iPhone 3g, my Bose headphones, my computer USB link, and my Bose base. The list goes on. The bumper has to be removed for use with each of these accessories. My belt holster still works, but the fit is very tight.
Conclusion. A poorly designed inadequate solution for a very big problem. It's not even worth getting the free one.
Sorry Apple. I've been very happy with your products prior to this. It's time for Mr. Jobs to be honest and replace this telephone. Did you hear the news that the man who headed up the iPhone 4 product was fired? The reasons are allegedly not related to the antenna debacle. If you believe that you'll never own your own home.
Little reception help, negates add-ons August 23, 2010 Mark J. Minasi (Virginia Beach, VA USA) Got this from Apple as part of their iPhone 4 fix. To keep it brief, this has two fatal flaws. First, it really doesn't address the reception issue. I've got a MicroCell in my house and my girlfriend's 3G gets five bars, where my iPhone 4 gets 2 to 4. Same MicroCell, same distance. Second, the bumper must, of course, have holes in it to allow access to things like the headset jack and the proprietary Apple iPhone connector... but apparently no one at Apple tried attaching anything to the iPhone connector. The Apple power/USB cable works, but that's it, so I end up wasting a lot of time removing the bumper to connect it to my car's sound system, my external battery and the like.
Give this a miss.
Best case you can get for the iPhone 4, with one exception! August 20, 2010 SZAA (Virginia) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well this is the absolute best case you can buy for the iPhone 4. I personally like to keep the look as true to form as possible so this does the job. I have dropped it with this on and it's definitely a sense of security about it. I also have a name brand screen protector on front and back so no scratching either! The look is superb, slim but keeps protection in mind. Volume and sleep buttons that push out are great, you won't find that on a cheap Chinese made (non-Apple) bumper.
I live in an area with decent reception so I don't notice much difference. Sure I did notice the "issue" but it never affected calls or data usage. I believe the media did what they do best and blew the whole thing way out of proportion and it was exaggerated more than necessary.
The one major issue I have with the Bumper is the charging dock area. It does not allow appropriate space for my Pioneer head unit cable to fit. I'm not sure if I will chance modifying the Bumper to make it fit, but it's definitely a pain to have to take it off to plug in the Pioneer adapter.
Overall I'm more than satisfied with the Bumper. It's the best way to have the "naked" look but still remain protected from minor slips and falls.
Apple iPhone 4 Bumper August 18, 2010 redfox Yes, as many reviews have said do not buy this bumper for anything more than $30. I actually checked Amazon over the period of a couple days and bought from a seller selling the case at retail. Also, you know (unless you live under a rock) that you get a free case from Apple by downloading a special App. I have too long to wait for my Incase.. case and decided to try the bumper.
Beyond the price:
1. The bumper looks sexy. I like the black on black personally and to be honest I actually like the way my phone looks with this bumper more than I did when it was naked. The shiny black strip on the edges mimics the glossy screen, the buttons look great, and its thin and snug. Some reviews said it was a little loose on youTube but I haven't found this to be true. I'm sure if you manhandle it this will be so.
2. For all its minimalism it provides decent protection. The bumper seems like it would absorb a small impact unless you drop it on an uneven surface (obviously the accident prone should use a heavy duty case). I like how I can lay my phone down on a table and not worry about scratching, as the little lip on each side protects the screen. The bumper also combines well with screen protector sheets. I have the Splash on mine and its not coming up at all, you just have to be picky when it is applied. I forget I have the protector on half the time.
3. The iPhone feels better in your hand with the bumper. When I was using the naked iPhone it felt fragile and slippery but with the case I have a better grip and feel like I can confidently manipulate the phone in my hand.
I'm definitely wishing I used my free case offer for this one. Beware of Apple Bumpers knockoffs, I'm sure the quality will be butchered.
Not too bad for first try from Apple. August 15, 2010 Andreas C. Bunadi (Singapore) Serve its purpose to protect the stainless steel band. Reasonable but don't expect too much.
