Returned this item September 9, 2010 JoeFargo This cam worked fine indoors, but I wanted to have it pointed outside through a window. All I could get was a white screen. The bright outdoor scenes completely overwhelmed the sensor. It works fine for indoor scenes, but unless it is a REALLY cloudy day or near dusk or dawn, it is unusable for outdoor scenes. At night, the led lights would reflect off the window glass back into the sensor, and again, overwhelm it.
It did not fit my requirements at all and I returned it for a refund.
Poor quality, difficult to set-up, didn't last September 6, 2010 Mike (WV) This product is terrible on every level. It took me hours to set it up to where it was usable. You have to reboot it after almost every change. The manual is almost useless. I got more help reading about the camera on-line than I did from the manual. I wanted the camera to monitor an area and email pictures to me if motion was detected. The camera was always about 3 seconds behind the detected motion, so all I got was the either a picture with nothing but background or a picture of a person's back walking away from the camera. After a week, the camera would quit working after it was on for more than 8 hours and I would have to unplug it, wait 5 minutes and plug it back in. 2 weeks after that it quit working all together. Now I have to figure out how to send it back.
Be careful which source you buy it from September 1, 2010 Michael A Barkett (Columbia, MD United States) If it looks too good to be true, then it is! I got mine from "VALUELINK SUPPLIES" and like many other suppliers, they offered it at about half the maximum price shown in the consolidated results.
The device looks a bit different than the one in the Amazon picture, but is very close. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, I want to believe it is an OEM of the real thing, especially since FOSCAM itself appears to be a Chinese company which would explain the broken English in the instruction manual.
However, many attributes of this device lead me to believe that it is merely a lookalike. After a couple hours with it, here are my notes.
Pros:
1. It works, for the most part.
2. The mobile phone app is an awesome feature - very cool!
3. Decent quality images, fairly flexible features for remote surveillance at a very good price.
4. Night vision is pretty cool.
Cons:
1. No SSL support. I hate this shortcoming and because of it I would never use this camera in a secured area.
2. Neither WPA nor WPA2 works properly, though it claims to support it. If you're lucky they'll work, but more likely you will have to switch to WEP or Open, neither of which are secure. Fortunately for me there is nothing else on this particular wifi network, although any savvy hacker driving by can get a view from my camera. Another reason not to point it at anything you can't already see through a window.
3. Makes a loud clicking noise randomly - I think this is a byproduct of a more serious deficiency, which is that the power cable is shoddy, doesn't stay connected very well.
4. Reset button does not reset to factory settings.
5. Network label panel on the back is just a sticker that came off within 5 minutes. No biggie, but indicative of cheapness.
6. This is the most suspicious trait. At the end of the manual it says, "to obtain the latest information and support for your Observer network camera, please visit our webpage for additional FAQ's and troubleshooting tips," yet there is no link to a webpage to be found anywhere in the docs except on the outer box, which says [...]. None of the model numbers on foscam.com match up with the model numbers printed on the documentation.
7. The included software is garbage, although the web interface is serviceable.
8. Lackluster Firefox support.
9. No idea whether my credentials in the mobile phone app are being kept private to me, or if a bunch of other people might have access to my cam. This is where SSL with client cert would provide more peace of mind.
10. No ability to restrict certain user accounts by IP address. Strike three on security. Ok for keeping an eye on your pets or front door maybe, but not the interior of your house or business.
I haven't tested the motion sensor alerts yet.
I will point out that I gave it 3 stars because it works pretty much as advertised (except as noted above) and the Foscam firmware did install on it properly. However, those are 3 very sketchy stars.
2 of 3 cameras died within 1 day August 30, 2010 Kelly Alexander 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought one of these as a test having been burned by IP cameras before. I was very happy with my first order, the camera worked and was easy to setup even without Windows (I just plugged it in and let it DHCP an address off my router and then went to that IP with a browser and did the rest of the setup in the web GUI). The night vision works well enough for a $120 camera and there is an iPhone app to view/pan/tilt the camera and that worked with minimal config on my end (just changed the web port on the camera and set my router to forward that port to the camera IP). Seemed like a great deal based on the first one so I bought 2 more of them.
Of the second shipment, one kept crashing/locking up/basically required a power-cycle every few hours. Useless. The other ended up with washed-out video as if the iris stuck full open after the first day. It worked in pitch black conditions with the night vision but with normal lighting in the room the image was mostly white and in bright daylight the image was completely white. No amount of tweaking the software or resetting the hardware would get it functional again. I'm sending both of these back.
So... if you get lucky you get a functional unit. If you're unlucky you get garbage. Worth the risk to you?
Great little indoor camera August 22, 2010 Andrew Coile (Marina, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was going out of town on a series of business trips, and wanted to be able to keep an eye on my apartment while I was away (before I got an alarm system installed). I read good reviews of this camera, and bought one.
This camera is great, especially after upgrading to the latest firmware. Great support for non-IE browsers (I'm a Mac user), and works well under Safari on the iPhone, but there is also at least one really good iPhone app that lets you do the Pan-Tilt by pressing on the image, and display up to six cameras in a grid.
No problem connecting to my wireless network, and I haven't had any problems with drops or freezes. Tested out the Motion Sensing software, and it worked perfectly....if it detects motion, it sends a series of captures to my email. The Schedule option lets me suppress them during the times I'm normally home.
I liked the first one so much, I immediately bought two more, and one of the outside cousins (that does *not* have pan-tilt) to monitor the rest of my apartment.
It's amazing the peace of mind you get on trips from being able to pull out your iPhone and look at all areas of your home.
Great little cameras, and the people at eWorld that I got mine from great to deal with, and incredibly fast on shipping.
