2 out of 5 stars Beware for iPhone 4   July 16, 2010
Steve Merlin (Atlanta, GA United States)

This product does not work with an iPhone 4 with the Bumper case. You cannot plug it in without removing the case. This renders it almost useless. I have also had issues with extraneous noises when applying the brakes and accelerating. In both cases high pitched whines are clearly heard. This latter issue may be car specific based on electronics, but the inability to use it with an iPhone 4 in a Bumper case is a bummer.

3 out of 5 stars FlexPod X2-better for charging than FM transmit   July 12, 2010

The physical functionality is great and rugged for holding your IPhone, however you will probably have to take off any protective skin to get the connection to settle down into the cradle. I have a very thin hard plastic skin and I had to take it off to get it to connect and make useful for FM transmitting. There is often bleed through on the prescribed channel (which I could not change to any other station on the FlexPod) So you only have one choice for FM transmiting. When driving your likely to get another station competing for the signal. I can't stand to use it for FM transmit for more than a song or two turned up fairly loud to drown out the background static. This item is better for powering your Iphone and keeping it held still for hands free navigation when using GPS/Google maps.

1 out of 5 stars Stay Away from this   July 11, 2010

I have been using the Flexpod 2 for about 4 months or so. I am writing
this review/feedback based on reviewing this product in both
urban/rural areas as well as testing it on several cars and SUV's.

As far as the hands free ability of this device goes, it's awful. The
mic on the iPhone is on the bottom of the unit where the phone plugs
into to charging port ok the flex2. This has nothing to do with your
phones ability in receiving 4 or 5 bars but it is due to the mic being
blocked by the charging base. What that said, the hands free is
useless.

Another problem I'm having is that my iPhone 3GS will say that the
flexpod 2 is not compatible with the iPhone and it will not charge.
This is on and off. It is not consistent. If I turn the power off on
the flexpod2 and then Turn it on, most of the time it will start
charging despite the message. Other times I have to shut the phone off
and then turn it on again before it will start charging.

As far as the fit goes of the grip holding the phone it is ok. I say
this because the phone may become loose if you hit a big bump on the
road. The other thing is that you MUST remove your case before using
it with this product. It will not work any other way. This is another
big design flaw. More than 90% of iphone owners use skins to protect
their investments and this device prohibits the use.

The FM transmitter is choppy. A links background noise. On the express
way away from big cities and buildings it's much better. But if you
live in a big city forget about not hearing static. I tried this in
Chicago, NYC, Miami, & Orlando. Of all of these cities Orlando was the
most clear. The rest of the cities too much static.

The other thing with this unit is that I you have an SUV or a
Minivan it will be lower down for you to look at as the lighter
charger is usually quite low on these types vehicles. In a sedan
It's usually much higher so it will be much higher and easier to look
at while driving.

Bottom line I do not recommend this product for those who want to buy
this as a hands-free device and audio transmitting purposes. If you
want it as an expensive charger knock yourself out. Keep in mind you
will need to take off the case to charge and risk scratching your
phone.

2 out of 5 stars Good, for a short time   July 5, 2010
Travis A. Jensen (Lehi, UT United States)
I was very impressed with this product when I first started using it. Unfortunately, it quickly failed (<60 days). Working with support (who were very supportive), I received a replacement. The replacement functioned just as well, for slightly longer (5-6 months). Unfortunately, it has failed as well.

What does "failure" mean? Random power outages, "Accessory not designed for iPhone" randomly popping up and interrupting usage, losing station presets. These events now happen enough that the charger is not usable.

4 out of 5 stars Very good - could be better.   June 24, 2010

This product really doesn't deserve some of the harsh criticism it has been getting in some of these review. It's a nice product that does its job, but it certainly could improve. I would have given it 5 stars if it were $10 cheaper or if it were $10 better.

Pros:
1. Ease of use. I chose this model over the newer one because I wanted to be able to pop the charger in, pop the phone in, and go. Extra cords are annoying. This design passes the simplicity test.
2. Quality sound. I don't know why this unit is so much better than the previous FM transmitters I've used, but it is. There is no static and the sound is clear and loud enough for me (not sure what the other reviewers are complaining about).
3. Good fit. My iPhone wears a medium sized case and it fits just fine. Larger cases will likely have problems.

Cons:
1. Inconsistent Auto-seek. Some times it works and sometimes it doesn't. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or if there just aren't any stations available, but it's not a very intuitive system. There's no way of knowing what the unit is doing. You push the buttons and either there is a channel right away, or you just keep mashing the buttons with no indication of what is happening in its little brain. There needs to be some sort of LED feedback.
2. Electrical whine. Is the sound good? Yes, especially at idle. Unfortunately, as my revs build I hear a faint whine through my speakers. Maybe this is a problem with insufficient grounding in my car, but it's there and it can be annoying.
3. Tricky fit. The lighter plug is in there tight insofar as it takes 2 hands to pull it out, but it is still able to spin around in there pretty freely. That's just the opposite of what I think they were trying to achieve. I'd like to be able to take a tight turn without the whole thing toppling over, but then still remove the unit without taking half the center console with me. I'm sure this requires some fancy industrial design, but I'd pay more for better.

Update: It seems that the auto-seek works only if you hold one button and then the other. If pressed simultaneously, no workie, but if 1 then 2, bingo.
