Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) The DVP-5982 features an HDMI output, capable of upconverting video signals to 720p/1080i and 1080p. This technology enables the DVP-5982 to carry high-definition audio and video information through a single cable and achieving the highest quality picture and clearest sound available. Progressive Scan The DVP-5982 is a progressive scan DVD player, capable of scanning an entire video frame at once; scan-lines commonly associated with interlaced video are drastically reduced. The result is a spectacularly clear image with no motion artifacts (stair-stepping), and details so sharp they seem as if they're etched onto the screen. Built-in Multi-Channel Decoders The DVP-5982 has built-in processors to handle the multi-channel decoders for Dolby Digital and DTS surround-sound, capable of advanced 24-bit processing and an outstanding sampling frequency of 192KHz. DivX Ultra Home Theater Certified DivX is video compression software which enables high quality video to be compressed into very small files then downloaded onto CD-R or CD-RW and played back with very little loss of quality. Multi-Format Player Don't worry about limited playback capabilities, the DVP-5982 plays DVD Audio/Video, DVD-R/W, DVD+R/W, CD, CD-R/W, SVCD, DivX Ultra, MP3, WMA, JPEG, HD-JPEG and TIFF. High-Performance Outputs With playback specifications that meet the standards of professionals, the DVP-5982 features a component video output for high-resolution low-distortion video playback, and a coaxial digital-audio output for high-quality audio playback. USB Direct Just plug your device into the USB port on your Philips DVD system. Your digital music and photos will be played directly from the device. Now you can share your favorite moments with family and friends. Parental Control

4 out of 5 stars Good bare bones codefree dvd player for price   November 19, 2008
I've been wanting to play my region 2 dvds on a dvd player seamlessly. I got this item because it's cheap and I didn't need bells and whistle. It does a good job playing dvds. The dvd tray responds a little slow and the remote just has the basics except an eject disc button.

5 out of 5 stars No need for other DVD player   November 16, 2008
If you are a film addict and like to watch movies in their original languages... and sometimes you cannot find gems in our limited American film/DVD stores and resort to buy them abroad: Do not worry about region incompatibility with those useless codes!

This machine will play it all!

I love it, because besides playing any DVD in this planet, it also upsamples the ones you have to a sharper, crispier and more detailed, elegant image. Something you could only dream of if purchasing a more expensive player... or a Bluray disc player.

The beauty of it is precisely how beautiful it presents the moving picture in any system you have and at a meager price, or course! How could you go wrong buying a player like that?

4 out of 5 stars not as awesome as XBMC, chokes on H.264 AVC high   November 15, 2008

Reads acceptable well from high quality USB flash drives like Corsair and Lexar.

NOT a suitable replacement for an xbox with Xbox Media Center.

NOT a front end for NAS.

*** Will NOT play x264 / H.264 videos. ***

Upscaling is nice if one has high quality HDMI cables.

There are many bugs with the most current firmware related to playback of other than DVD video. Don't expect another firmware release. One will likely be invited to purchase the next hardware iteration.

Easy Region Free is a plus.

It is slow to complete power up. Slow to recognize no DVD in tray, then slow to decide to poll USB. Once high quality USB flash device detected no transfer rate hiccups. It is slow to eject the DVD drive. Stopping stand alone media files is VERY slow sometimes requiring mashing stop half a dozen times.

Of the other brands of set top stand alone media file players sporting USB ports we've tested this one was the least annoying.

If one requires MUCH better responsiveness and the ability to play 99% of available formats XBMC on Xbox360 is still the best choice.

do not pay more than 15 over half a Franklin. 20 for shipping is OUTRAGEOUS.

I returned mine to the amazon vendor for retard-level shipping: retail box tossed in the mail. I bought one from a membership wholesale club for less than half a Franklin.

5 out of 5 stars A really nice player!   October 6, 2008

I was really dubious about the quality of this unit, but bought it anyways. I have yet to find a disc it won't play and the up-converted picture quality is as good (or at least nearly as good) as the up-conversion on my $400 blu ray player. I bought it because so many movies I like are available in other regions of the world and not in the U.S. I've heard stories about problems playing PAL movies on U.S. TVs -- none here! I hooked it up to my 65" Mitsubishi LCD HDTV via an HDMI connector (not supplied) and every PAL disc I've played is crystal clear, sharp and detailed, with no video noise or distortion. I'm watching old favorites I haven't in seen 20 years and they look better than ever!

This unit doesn't have all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a high-end player. For example, if you're looking for high-end audio you probably won't find it here. But it does a great job in delivering all the basics and it even has a few features I didn't expect (like digital zoom). I've had some issues with Philips in the past, but they did a nice job on this unit and at a very reasonable price. In fact, I liked it so much that I bought a second unit for the bedroom. I wanted something to up-convert regular DVDs for my Vizio HD set and I didn't want to spend the big bucks on another blu ray.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect DVD player for serious movie fans   August 5, 2008

I got this DVD player with two goals in mind. First, I just purchased my first high def television. Although I plan on buying a Sony Playstation 3 in the very near future to play Blu-ray discs on, I own several hundred older DVDs that either cannot be replaced or that I couldn't afford to replace even if Blu-ray alternatives are available. So I wanted an Up-conversion DVD player that would maximize the potential of the discs I already owned. This player does an outstanding job of this. I've retained my former DVD player because it is a DVD player/VHS player. The difference between DVDs played on that player and this one is striking.

The second goal was to get a player that would play discs from any region. I'm a big lover of British cinema. [...]. For instance, I love the films of British comic actors like Alastair Sim and Will Hay. You can find only very little Sim and absolutely no Hay in Region 1 format discs. But now I can order those discs from Amazon UK in Region 2 format. All those films I saw ages ago in various film societies will now be available for me to own.

I will add that one reviewer mentioned how flimsy the disc tray is. I will second that. It hasn't broken but it definitely feels delicate. Apart from this caveat this is close to a perfect player.
