Definitely not an iphone April 1, 2008 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
Let me preface this by saying I'm not a cell phone fanatic, I was just looking for an update with some cool features. I did some homework & thought I was getting the best deal for under $150.
I just bought the A988+ for $148 (free 1Gb micro SD & shipping) on -bay & would probably return it if I could.
Problems: 1) It is not an iphone, check out the p168+ if you are looking for something closer, but from the sound of it, if you really want an iphone, you will only be happy with the real thing. 2) There is very little info out there about this phone, when compared to the 168 (check out youtube). I hope this will change soon. 3) It is really loud, even on the lowest setting. When talking, I can't hold it to my ear 1/2 the time. It has 3-D sound (5 speakers) so if you want to listen to your music from across the room you can, but overkill for me. 4) Probably due to amplification, I hear some hissing from the other person when talking. 5) I have not been able to read or send text messages yet (currently scouring the internet). 6) It comes with no software for converting videos & you cannot simply drag mp4's to the memory card & expect it to play. I know you can convert them with free programs, I just have to figure out how to. 7) When typing you have to use the stylus because the keyboard only gets to about 1/5 the screen size. You have to switch to the "symbols" menu to add a space. The "backspace" button is too close to everything else, so you have to be extra careful. 8) You can only schedule 1 alarm at a time (I like to set 2 to make sure I get up in the morning). To set another one you have to go through the calendar. 9) The date is in the YY/MM/DD format. 10) You can't set ring tones for individual people. 11) It does have a drawing feature, but it's almost pointless. Try making a straight line & it looks like an EKG machine is going crazy. 12) So far I've only seen manuals in english for sale on -bay for $4.
Good Things: 1) Background pics are easy to set. Just image search iphone backgrounds. 2) mp3's play easily, just put them on the memory card. 3) I like the camera; it takes pretty decent pictures for a phone. 4) Battery life has been good, but I'm also not on it 24/7 & I charge it whenever I'm near a computer. You can charge it through the USB cable they give you & the external battery charger w/ a 2nd battery. I don't plan on using it unless I'm away from a computer for a couple of days. 5) When dialing a # the buttons are large enough to use a careful finger. 6) It is Quad-band 7) Took my Cingular SIM card no problem
* I have not tried the TV-out function because I have not figured out how to put a video that will play on it yet.
Bottom Line: It looks pretty cool but is more of a pain in the butt than it is worth. I hope this helps a few of you out there looking for an awesome phone because you should probably avoid this one.
