Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The super.fi 4vi incorporates the same speaker technology and sound signatures used in Ultimate Ears custom personal monitors, featuring detailed bass with crisp and clean mids and highs. In addition, the noise isolating design reduces ambient interference and enhances sound quality. The ultra compact and lightweight housing makes for a comfortable fit and is perfect for the active, fashion minded consumer. The machined aluminum housing compliments the sophisticated look and feel of the iPhone. An inline control button allows you to answer/end phone calls and control music/video playback functions.

2 out of 5 stars Good sound but Poor buid quality   November 30, 2008
The sound is good and the iphone compatibility is great. However the build quality of the wire and 3.5mm plug is terrible. I have already returned my first set for warranty replacement after sound stopped coming out of one speaker due to a loose contact in the 3.5mm plug. This was about 2 months after I bought it. Now less than 2 months after I got the replacement the same exact thing has happened. You really have to baby these earphones so they are not good for portable use which they are designed for. My theory is that the 3.5mm plus is not built to be sturdy so regular stresses on it eventually cause the wires inside to break off. They don't have any stress relief component like any quality or even basic 3.5mm plug. What a shame, its a great set of earphones otherwise. I can't deal with having ot treat them with kid gloves all the time and have to send them in for replacement every 2 months. Wait until they address the build quality issues. Shure is much much better in this regard.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing Special   November 17, 2008

The Ultimate Ears Super.fi 4vi is a decent headset. It is designed beautifully, though the control button is in a weird location, midway between the earbuds and the plug. I personally am used to iPhone headsets having their control functions located near or on the microphone, like the Apple, V-moda, and Etymotic ones. I did like the fact that the microphone is smaller, though, than either the V-moda or Etymotic ones.

I tested these against the Etymotic hf2, the standard Apple iPhone Stereo Headset, and the V-moda Vibe Duo. I found that the sound, though a bit warmer than the Etymotic hf2, is nothing special. It is nowhere near as clear as the hf2, although it has more support for bass frequencies. At least it didn't have the overpowering bass of the Vibe Duo.

The ear tips fit well, although I had one of the medium tips get stuck in my left ear twice. As with any in-ear monitors, the tips must provide a good seal for good bass response and noise isolation. Speaking of which, ambient noise was drastically reduced, almost as much as the Etymotic hf2.

It is a good value, but it is nothing special, as I've stated previously. The sound quality is between that of the Apple iPhone Stereo headset and the Etymotic Research hf2.

1 out of 5 stars Pretty good sound + lousy build quality = look elsewhere   October 16, 2008

These sounded pretty decent, but within two weeks of my purchase, it started to short out: the short was right above the plug that goes into the iPhone. OK, the iPhone and cord sometimes ends up in my pocket, and if I sit it might bend a little. But to short out in two weeks with what I consider normal and acceptable wear, particularly at this price point? Not acceptable. I found better build quality with some altec lansing buds that are made of this braided nylon cord, and the ear fit was better than the Ultimate Ears. Of all the buds I've tried, the altec's were the best, and my strong take away is that you shouldn't have to spend more than $100 to get very decent sounding, durable buds.

This product is Ok - not worth the hype nor the money. They function fine but not the be all - end all that are advertised.

4 out of 5 stars Good quality for reasonable price   October 11, 2008
I have used Shure E3c and Bose quiet comfort headphones and like the price and performance of the UE 4vi. I really like the microphone and control integration. Any complaint about the button should be taken with a grain of salt. UE has redesigned the button so that it is a real button and not a membrane button. It works great. If you have used the iphone earphones, you'll understand how nice this control is.

The UE 4vi does a great job at blocking external sounds. This allows you to listen to your audio at a lower volume. The microphone works great. I use it on conference calls nearly every day and no one complains of noise. You will have to train yourself to talk at a normal level if you have the earphones in while talking. People will naturally speak louder when they can't hear themselves.

The more expensive ones are probably pretty nice, but I am glad that I saved myself a bit of money and went with this pair.
