Useful if you can find the right place for it, phone cradle isn't very good June 5, 2010 MGIxian (Austin, TX United States) The mount itself will probably work very well for some cars but larger vehicles, like pickups, might have problems with it. The very short length of the arm on this, and lack of a rotating joint on the adhesive end, limits where you can put it. On the other hand it's shallow mounting point means it fits in dash slots where other mounts do not. That's where I found this to be really useful - it fit right in to the small and otherwise useless pocket underneath the OEM radio in my wife's Volvo XC90. Take a good look at the pictures though - it requires a very flat surface to mount to. In my Nissan Titan there's literally no where for it to go (lucky I didn't buy two!).
Not every mount is going to be right for every car so I can't fault it too much for that. The ball swivel is useful and I do like the fact it can lock in place. It has far more play side to side than it does up and down but it gets the job done.
The biggest problem with this thing is the cradle itself. It's not that great - not adjustable in the slightest, padded only on the back, not the sides, and it won't fit a phone with any but the thinnest of cases, and even then it was very tight. Even without a case fitting it in takes some effort, more than you are probably going to want to deal with on a daily basis. Fortunately, the cradle actually screws on to the thing, which has 8 different mounting holes for some reason (probably it's meant to be used with cradles besides than the one for the iPhone), and as such it's not hard to MacGyver a different mount and cradle on to it with a little mental effort. I actually ended up taking a mount fitting from a $9 Scosche kit I found at Fry's and using that with it's cradle, which is fully adjustable and fits the phone much better (and easier). The Scosche kit has a terrible dash mount, the opposite of this one, so just like Reeses Pieces when put together I ended up with a sum that was greater than it's parts.
With that in place my wife finally finds this to be useful. On it's own I'd look elsewhere.
Great product but watch out... May 28, 2010 nowandthen (San Jose, CA) I gave this one star because no where in the instructions does it warn you that the cleaner may eat the paint off your dash. That's right, I used the included "surface preparation kit" and the first cleaner didn't appear to do much but when I wiped off the area with the second pad which is an alcohol wipe, it took the paint off my dash! I don't know if it was the first chemical wipe or the alcohol wipe but none the less, my dash panel is ruined. So be careful if you buy one of their products. Test the complete cleaning process in an inconspicuous area. This warning should be in large bold type in their instructions. If I had been warned about possible paint damage I would have tested the cleaning procedure. If I didn't end up with damaged paint I would have given this product five stars.
I have a 2001 Jeep Wrangler and I mounted the adhesive pad on the left side of my (now ruined) center stack. The adhesive pad stuck very well. After completing the installation I inserted my iPhone and took it for a test drive. Warning! If you have a rough riding vehicle you may want to think twice about buying a phone cradle or a least consider a very solid style mount. Even though this one has a short arm the poor phone shook like crazy. So much so that the shacking would cause the iPhone to shuffle the songs. I didn't know the iPhone had a shake to shuffle option but I know now. LOL. (I turned the shake to shuffle option off.) I couldn't tolerate the phone shaking so much so I took the mount apart to try a different approach. This phone cradle unscrews in various locations so it is quite versatile. I removed the extension arm and set is aside. I mounted the phone cradle/ball assembly directly to the adhesive pad (no extension arm in-between). The ball has a short stem attached. This configuration was much better. The phone didn't shake nearly as much. But the phone was now partially obstructed by my steering wheel and I could no longer rotate the phone. So i took the phone cradle apart again. Pried the sticky pad off my dash and set it aside. I figured since the center-stack dash panel was already ruined that I would give it another shot. My next approach involved drilling a small hole in the dash panel. This allowed me to mount the ball and stem assembly to the face of my dash panel (the panel is easily removed on Jeeps). This method required a slightly longer machine screw, washer, lock washer and nut. So far this is the best method. Mounting the ball and stem assembly to the adhesive pad is a more robust method but I just didn't have any place to use that configuration. My method doesn't appear to shake any worse than the a fore mentioned method. I can now rotate the phone 90 degrees and it's no longer obstructed by the steering wheel. I'll see how well it holds up. I may try to reinforce it further but it may be OK. Time will tell.
In summary, I think this is a high quality bracket. BUT BE CAREFUL! THE CLEANERS MAY REMOVE YOUR PAINT! Another reviewer complained about the ball not locking in place but mine works just fine. Also I had no problem with the adhesive pad adhering to my dash, but as you know I now have no paint left on my dash in that area. UGH! Good luck!
Tight Fit March 18, 2010 B. McMillen With out the case the IPhone fits the holder very well. I would like to see them make a charging dock out of this holder for my car.
Limited installing spot March 1, 2010 Menghsiu Got it for my husband's iPhone, but the only place that we can put it is on the passenger side wall, right below the glove compartment (kind of like the picture of the other reviewer). I was hoping that we can use it somewhere in the middle, near the radio, so it's easier to see while driving. Since the only spot for it is not quite where we would like it to be, we still haven't put it up yet.
Very good product! February 18, 2010 Oded Souffan (Israel) *** UPDATED See Below ***
I bought this item, and was generally satisfied with it. Build quality seems good.
I went over all the instructions, and even kept the thing without touching it for 72 hours as recommended.
It is now two days past those 72 hours.
I am beginning to notice the the glue is pilling off from one of the sides. I fear that at this rate it won't last for very long.
Perhaps this item is not supposed to work in very hot environments (I live in Israel). Although if that is the case, why use the "international" tag in the product name?
*** Update 08-March-2019 ***
After having the product for over a month now I am taking back by initial reservations. I reapplied the glue connector firmly, and it's been staying on for over 3 weeks now without issues.
The arm is very ergonomic, the manual doesn't say it clearly enough but you can also change the angle of the arm at the base (by flipping the arm after removing a screw). I have it installed very close to the steering wheel, and now I don't even need a bluetooth headset, I hear the person on the other side from my car speakers, and I am close enough to the iPhone's microphone that they can hear me good enough.
So, I am bumping from 3 stars to 5 stars. Good product, highly recommended.
